Offered here from
the dougfinds collection of curated fashion, accessories, clothing,
collectibles, and unique gifts is this original framed M/V Regent Sea Panama
Canal/Caribbean Cruise itinerary souvenir, dated February 8–15, 1987.
Now this is a
wonderful little time capsule from the earlier years of modern Caribbean
cruising.
The printed souvenir
documents a Panama Canal/Caribbean Cruise aboard M/V Regent Sea, with a
central route map identifying Montego Bay, Ocho Rios, Cartagena, the Panama
Canal and Aruba. Surrounding the itinerary are colorful postage stamps
representing destinations along the voyage, including examples from Jamaica,
Colombia, Panama and Aruba.
The reverse carries
a handwritten notation:
“Feb.
8–15, 1987”
That date falls
squarely within Regent Sea's early Regency Cruises career. The ship had begun
operating Caribbean cruises from Montego Bay in November 1985 and was part of
Regency's Caribbean/Panama Canal program during this era.
Even better is the
history behind the ship itself.
M/V
Regent Sea began life as the Swedish American Line ocean liner MS Gripsholm,
built in 1957.
After several changes of ownership and identity, the vessel was extensively
refurbished and became Regent Sea for the newly established Regency Cruises
during the mid-1980s. The ship remained with Regency until the cruise line
ceased operations in 1995.
Eventually sold for
scrap, the former Regent Sea never reached the breakers — she sank off South
Africa in 2001 while under tow to the scrapyard, bringing an unusual end to
a ship whose career stretched back to the classic transatlantic-liner era.
