Offered
here from the dougfinds collection of curated fashion, accessories, clothing,
collectibles, and unique finds is this wonderful matching set of three vintage
Colonial Williamsburg ceramic architectural wall tiles, manufactured in
England by renowned English tile maker H & R Johnson Ltd.
Each
approximately 6" square glazed ceramic tile features a beautifully
detailed illustration of one of Colonial Williamsburg's most recognizable historic
landmarks, surrounded by matching decorative foliate corner borders.
Together,
the three tiles form a particularly attractive architectural souvenir set
celebrating historic Williamsburg, Virginia.
THE
THREE LANDMARKS
RALEIGH
TAVERN — Williamsburg, Virginia
A detailed rendering of one of Colonial Williamsburg's best-known taverns and
gathering places, prominently identified beneath the illustration.
COURT
HOUSE — Williamsburg, Virginia
Features the historic brick courthouse with its distinctive cupola, arched
windows and central entrance.
GOVERNOR'S
PALACE — Williamsburg, Virginia
Depicts the imposing colonial Governor's Palace complex with its brick
architecture, chimneys, cupola and surrounding grounds.
All
three pieces share the same attractive design language: black architectural
linework with restrained green, brick-red and earth-tone coloring, glossy
white ceramic grounds and matching gray-black scrolling botanical corner
decoration.
GENUINE
ENGLISH-MADE CERAMIC TILES
The
reverse sides retain faint but identifiable molded manufacturer's markings
including:
H
& R JOHNSON LTD
and
MADE
IN ENGLAND
H
& R Johnson was a major English ceramic tile manufacturer founded in
Stoke-on-Trent in 1901, making these especially interesting as a marriage of English
ceramic manufacture and American Colonial Williamsburg souvenir culture.
ORIGINAL
WALL-MOUNTING HARDWARE
Perhaps
my favorite feature of the set is something you don't even see once they're
displayed:
Each
tile retains its original wooden mounting assembly on the reverse,
allowing the ceramic tile to stand slightly away from the wall when hung and
creating the appearance of a floating decorative plaque.
All
three wooden mounting assemblies remain securely attached.
MEASUREMENTS
Each
tile measures approximately:
6" × 6"
Please
see measurement photograph for additional reference.
CONDITION
Good vintage condition with very attractive display surfaces.
The
glossy decorated faces remain bright, colorful and remarkably well preserved,
with the architectural scenes and decorative corner borders presenting
beautifully.
The
fronts show scattered minor age/use evidence appropriate to vintage decorative
ceramic pieces. Please review the close-up photographs for the most accurate
representation of condition.
The
reverse sides show considerably more evidence of age, including staining,
discoloration, accumulated surface wear and darkening around portions of the
unglazed ceramic edges. These areas are entirely on the backs and are not
visible during normal wall display.
The
molded manufacturer's marks are quite faint due to their white-on-white
presentation but remain identifiable under angled lighting and are documented
in the photographs.
The
original wooden mounting pieces show expected age and wear but remain securely
attached.
