Offered here from the dougfinds collection of
curated fashion, accessories, clothing, collectibles, and unique gifts is this
wonderful vintage White
Rotary Series 77 electric sewing machine, complete with its fitted carrying
case, original Series 77 user's manual and a group of metal bobbins.
LIGHTWEIGHT MAGNESIUM-BODY
77MG VERSION
This machine carries
serial number 77MG-20300. The “MG” designation identifies the lighter-weight
magnesium-bodied version of White's Series 77, developed as a more portable
alternative to the considerably heavier standard cast-iron 77. Despite its
lighter casting, it retains the substantial all-metal mechanical construction
for which these White Rotary machines are known.
This is a terrific
surviving example of the heavy, beautifully engineered all-metal domestic
sewing machines White was known for — finished in a distinctive textured
olive/industrial green with polished metal controls and the classic gold-tone White
Rotary badge prominently displayed on the arm.
And this one isn't being
offered merely as an attractive old machine that happened to be sitting in a
case.
CAREFULLY CLEANED,
LUBRICATED & TESTED
Before electrical testing,
the machine was approached conservatively because of its age.
Old accumulated residue
and lubricant were carefully cleaned from accessible areas, including the motor
grease cups. The lubrication system was then serviced, the motor cups were
repacked with fresh quality grease, and appropriate machine lubrication was
applied according to the lubrication points identified for the machine.
The machine was allowed to
sit after servicing, then was slowly rotated by hand in the proper operating
direction to distribute lubrication before electrical operation was
attempted.
Only after this process
was the machine plugged in and powered.
Result: the built-in light
operates and the machine has been tested under power with the foot control and
runs.
Please understand that
this is still a vintage mechanical/electrical sewing machine. It has not
been represented as professionally restored, rebuilt, electrically recertified
or professionally serviced.
IDENTIFICATION
A metal identification
plate mounted to the rear of the machine is clearly marked:
77MG-20300
An additional white
factory-style marking on the machine reads “47 / CONTROL No. 3.” This
appears to be a production, inspection or control marking rather than the
machine's primary identifying number and is documented in the photographs.
ORIGINAL SERIES 77 USER'S
MANUAL INCLUDED
An especially nice
addition is the accompanying White Rotary Electric Sewing Machines Series 77
User's Manual.
The manual contains
operating diagrams and instructions specifically illustrating the Series 77
machine, including controls, threading, lubrication, motor information, bobbin
winding and other operating procedures.
It shows normal
age-related toning, handling and wear but remains a particularly useful and
desirable companion to the machine.
The manual identifies:
White Sewing Machine
Corporation
Cleveland 11, Ohio
ACCESSORIES
Also included is the clear
plastic bobbin case shown containing a group of vintage metal sewing-machine
bobbins.
Everything included in the
sale is shown in the photographs.
FITTED PORTABLE
CARRYING/STORAGE CASE
The machine comes with its
substantial vintage fitted carrying case.
The case opens to
accommodate the machine and includes divided storage compartments within the
lid. It retains its carrying handle, metal hardware and latches.
The case shows
considerably more cosmetic age and use than the machine itself, including
scuffs, scratches, edge wear, finish loss and areas of exterior covering
damage.
IMPORTANT CORD DISCLOSURE
One section of the vintage
cord's outer covering/sheathing showed damage.
That area was deliberately
opened sufficiently to inspect the electrical conductors beneath the outer
covering. The underlying insulated wires were intact and undamaged upon
visual inspection.
Following inspection, the
affected outer area was rewrapped with electrical tape. The subsequent taped
condition is documented in the photographs.
The machine was tested
successfully afterward as described above.
CONDITION
The machine itself
presents remarkably well for its age.
The textured green finish
remains attractive with scattered normal surface marks, rubs and signs of
previous use. Metal controls and trim present nicely, and the wonderful
original White Rotary badge remains an immediate visual focal point.
The machine has been
cleaned carefully, serviced with fresh lubrication as described above, manually
cycled before power-up, and tested running under electrical power. The
built-in work light also operates.
The carrying case shows
significantly more wear, including scratches, scuffs, edge/corner wear,
exterior covering loss and other age-related cosmetic deterioration.
The manual shows expected
age toning and handling wear.
A terrific surviving White
Rotary Series 77 — complete enough to appeal to the vintage sewing-machine
collector, attractive enough for display, and, after careful servicing, still
willing to get up and go.
Please review all photographs
carefully, as they are considered part of the description and provide the best
representation of this item's condition.
