This traditional woven bamboo conical hat—often referred to as a Douli, rice hat, farmer's hat, or Asian sun hat—was designed to provide shade while allowing excellent ventilation during long hours of outdoor work. The lightweight, open-weave construction keeps the wearer cool while protecting from the sun, making this style an enduring symbol of agricultural life throughout much of East and Southeast Asia.

Included is a removable woven bamboo head support ring that suspends the hat slightly above the wearer's head, promoting airflow and improving comfort. While the insert is a later replacement rather than the original companion piece, it is well matched in size and functions exactly as intended.

Detailed Condition

The hat remains in very good vintage condition with no major structural damage observed. The bamboo displays an attractive aged patina consistent with years of natural oxidation and use. Minor variations, slight fraying, and age-related wear are present, all of which contribute to its authentic character.

The included woven bamboo insert is not the original insert supplied with the hat. Its lighter blonde color and different weaving pattern indicate it was crafted separately and added later. It fits the hat properly and performs the same intended function of suspending the hat above the wearer's head for improved comfort and ventilation. The difference has been reflected in both the photographs and pricing.
